Does God do bad things to good people? Devotional for Friday, September 2, 2011

These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold–though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. 1 Peter 1:7

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.  James 1:13
Today we continue or KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) series. Every Christian has been confronted with “Why does God allow bad things to happen to good folks?” or by the person who has abandoned the Christian walk because of some perceived wrong God has committed.
Here’s the simple point:Trials are sent by God to cause us to stand. Temptation to sin is sent by the devil to cause us to stumble. Put another way: God wants to strengthen us. Satan wants to weaken us. One is meant for our maturity. The other is meant for our misery. For this stand point it’s a question of intention. God intends things for our good; Satan does not.
But when we are in a struggle or trial or temptation, does it really matter if it comes from a well-intentioned God or an evil intentioned Satan? It certainly will not seem like it. From our view point we must always consider that God works all things for good. No matter the source of our trouble, we need to focus on the truth that Our God loves us and protects us. He will not allow anything to happen to us without providing us with the strength to deal with it.
We must never forget that our circumstances are not a measure of our Father’s love for us. We can expect difficulties and trials; but we can also expect love and strength and, most importantly, ultimate victory.
Allow the power of Christ to prevail in you and be blessed.
Nick
