Don’t Plan Without God

Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass —Psalm 37:5

Most of us spend way too much time planning. Since we don’t know what tomorrow holds, planning on our own is just guessing. It leads to worry and the misplacement of resources. Consider I have a dollar. What should I do with it? Save it. Give it to missions. Buy something for a family member. Treat myself. If we are walking life alone we have to make a decision and planning will come into play. But if we are in relationship with God, He tells us what to do. In the first case we are just guessing as to what is best and we are setting ourselves up for worry. Did I make the right decision? If we are walking with God, we just do what He says knowing it is right and trusting in him for today and tomorrow.
We can tell when we have been walking on our own rather than in relationship. God seems to have a delightful way of upsetting the plans we have made, when we have not taken Him into account. We get ourselves into circumstances that were not chosen by God, and suddenly we realize that we have been making our decisions  without Him— that we have not even considered Him to be a vital, living factor in our lives. And yet the only thing that will keep us from even the possibility of worrying is to bring God in.

Another way we know we are on the wrong path is when we begin to make our decisions based on the evil around us. Yes there is evil, but God has conquered it. Don’t let it make your decisions for you. Listen to Him.

You cannot hoard things for a rainy day if you are truly trusting Christ. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled . . .” (John 14:1 ). God will not keep your heart from being troubled. It is a command— “Let not. . . .”

It is helpful to notice a difference here. If God is telling you to put something aside, then, of course, do it.  He told Pharaoh, through Joseph to put aside for 7 years for famine was coming.  However, to set things aside “in case of rain” isn’t listening to God and it’s a sign of a weakened relationship and a lack of trust in Him.

We don’t know what tomorrow holds. To plan, is just to guess. To do as He says today takes away the guess work and insures the blessing.

Be blessed.
