Happy Labor Day

Genesis 2:15

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

Proverbs 24:30-34

30 I passed by the field of a sluggard,

by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,

31 and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns;

the ground was covered with nettles,

and its stone wall was broken down.

32 Then I saw and considered it;

I looked and received instruction.

33 A little sleep, a little slumber,

a little folding of the hands to rest,

34 and poverty will come upon you like a robber,

and want like an armed man.

Colossians 3:23

23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 3 in 2012) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events. Wikipedia
Yesterday about 4 in the afternoon it clouded up a bit and seemed (at least from my air conditioned living room) that it had cooled a bit outside. I donned work clothes and headed outside to work on my much neglected yard. Isaac had left some mess; not much but some. I gather together the tools I thought I would need. By that time I was hot and exhausted and went to Smoothie King for some refreshment. I returned to the house and did managed to do a fair amount of clean up in the next couple of hours. I am clearly not ready for full time yard work.
During my months as “the man with the cane” I lost most of the little endurance I had and it seems it will take a while before it comes back. I can take some comfort in the fact that no one else in my neighborhood was outside in the 90 degree heat doing anything constructive.
I must say it felt good to come back into the house drenched with sweat. I enjoyed the refreshing shower that followed. I missed the dirty hands, sweat soaked shirt, really tired experience that a bit of manual labor provides. Maybe I’m not the only one who has lost touch with the beauty and satisfaction of hard work. For too many of us work means pounding computer keys or pushing paper.
Maybe instead of stuffing myself with barbecue or vegetating in front of the television, I’ll spend labor day…laboring.
Is there something you need to be doing?
Just asking.
Be blessed.
