How I’m Voting Tuesday

Today I took the time to get my sample ballot. You can do that at geauxvote.com. It’s a thoughtful thing to do so you don’t get your first look at the ballot in the voting booth and hold up the line while you make up your mind.

No one has asked me how I intend to vote. That’s kind of insulting. People used to ask, but I think they generally didn’t like my answers. So I am going to use this forum to pass the word on what I’ll be doing. You may find it informative, entertaining or irritating. I don’t care which.

SECRETARY OF STATE: I’m voting for Kyle Ardoin. He had to take over when his predecessor resigned in the face of sexual allegations. This list of candidates is long. Kyle has been in office more than a week and is, therefore, the most experienced. He has held office for more than a week and hasn’t been indicted or been forced to resign. He’s my kind of politician. I use the Secretary of State website a lot for legal purposes. It always seems to work and that’s all I need.

US REPRESENTATIVE: I’m voting to Higgins. He’s colorful. He’s been there for two years and hasn’t been forced to resign or been indicted. He’s been on Fox News a lot. There is only one other Republican running. I know him. I’m not voting for him. I am being careful not to say anything that will get me sued for slander or libel. Higgins used to be a cop and did great PSAs. You got to love that.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ONE; FELONS IN PUBLIC OFFICE. If we don’t allow felons in public office who will we have left? Seriously, I probably would never vote for a felon, but I want the chance to decide on each case. VOTE NO.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TWO: UNANIMOUS JURY VERDICTS. Only one other state doesn’t require unanimous jury verdicts and that’s Oregon. Who wants to be like the Oregon Ducks? Not me. VOTE YES.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THREE; ALLOW LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO SHARE RESOURCES. My momma taught me to share. VOTE YES.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT FOUR: DIVERSIONS OF DEDICATED TRANSPORTATION FUNDING TO STATE POLICE. Diverting of funding sounds bad, almost illegal. Every time I see a State Cop he is writing me a ticket. VOTE NO.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT FIVE; TAX EXEMPTIONS FOR PROPERTY IN TRUST. Just trust me on this. Get it “trust” me? VOTE YES.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT SIX: LARGE TAX INCREASES ON HOMES. The title on this makes you think you should vote no. But it’s about phasing in of large increases in assessments. Seems fair to me. VOTE YES.

LOUISIANA FANTASY SPORTS. This is going to pass. Every other state, almost, is doing it. I hate gambling so I’m going to VOTE NO.

NEW TAXES: There are two tax proposals. One for the jail and one for the courts. If you like jails and courts you can vote yes. I am a lawyer and I know both too well. I’m going to VOTE NO.

Well, are you educated, amused or upset? Don’t know why I’m asking I don’t care. I guess I shouldn’t make these decisions on a day when schools are closed because it’s cloudy.
