Hypocrisy

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am, at just what a bunch of hypocrites we are. This world is really messed up. Let me give you some examples. A well-known football player for the New England Patriots is charged with murder and is alleged to have committed an execution style killing of a potential witness to a double killing that occurred last summer. His jerseys are going for over $200 on the internet. Apparently some folks think it would be cool to wear the football jersey of an alleged murderer.
A sixty something year old woman who was born in Georgia and grew up in the south admits to having used the “n word” in the past. Everyone that knows her swears she is a loving and kind person who has helped many of all races. Yet her products are taken off the shelves of stores and she is the biggest news story of the summer thus far. Now folks are making special efforts to buy her products just to show support. We have to come up with more summer activities for folks. By the way, if you are really bored you can now find the actual transcripts of the deposition that caused all this controversy. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that what the woman actually said and under what circumstances isn’t at all what has been repeated in the media. Surprise. Surprise. The woman is a cook. Get over it.
A respected leader of the church has the horror of a son committing suicide and “Christians” use it as an opportunity to decry his theology or methods of church growth, or to say this is a “punishment” from God. And they will know we are Christians by our love.
Have we lost our collective minds? Is life so easy that we have nothing better to do than spend time on these “issues?”  I mean I know what the real problem is. Focusing on our own lives and the problems right in front of us should be motivating us to action. It’s really hot out there so we rather just waste time considering other people.
Okay so obviously some of you don’t have enough to do. Here are some suggestions:
1. My church, and probably yours, is have a VBS soon. Sure could use some more volunteers.
2. Summer is moving on. Maybe your grandkids would enjoy learning what it was like growing up where and when you did. Have you ever told them the story of your life before and after Christ? Have you ever told stories or used words you now regret. Be vulnerable. Someone might learn from your experience. Just don’t do it in a deposition under oath. People might stop making your recipe for fudge.
3.  My flower beds are full of weeds and even after my remarkable knee surgery I can’t kneel down in them. Come over any time. The garden tools are under the carport. Don’t tell me you are here. I’m too busy digging up weird stories on the internet.
4.  There are apparently some people who haven’t heard or have forgotten about forgiveness. I bet you have some personal stories you could share. If not, there are some great ones in the Bible.
5. Lots of folks are lost and/are discouraged. They sure could use a word.
All I know is there are a lot better ways to spend the summer than the way most of America has spent the first half of it. Let’s do better in the second half.
Be blessed.
Nick
