Jesus is Coming Back – Devotional for Saturday, May 21, 2011

Some are saying Jesus is returning on Saturday. I don’t think so. I believe He is returning soon; but I also believes no man knows the date. The sad thing is that these false prophecies detract from the very real truth that He is returning. That’s not a wild-eyed fringe view but is the belief of nearly every denomination.
So what does the bible say about His return? What will it be like? What should we be doing while we wait?
The bible has much to say about Jesus’ return.
  • One out of every 30 verses in the Bible mentions the subject of Christ’s return or the end of time.
  • Of the 216 chapters in the New Testament, there are well over 300 references to the return of Christ.
  • 23 of the 27 New Testament books mention Christ’s return.
  • In the Old Testament, such well-known and reliable men of God as Job, Moses, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, as well as most of the minor prophets mention Christ’s return in their writings.
  • Christ often spoke specifically about His own return to earth.
  • Throughout the centuries, Christ’s disciples and followers have adamantly believed, written, and taught that Christ would someday return to earth.

The Bible teaches it. The Lord Jesus stood upon its truths. The apostles declared it and wrote about it. The creeds include it and affirm it.
So what will it be like? We will hear, see and feel His return.
Jesus “will descend from heaven with a shout” The Lord will come down from above (Acts 1:11), to be met in the air by newly resurrected deceased saints and then, a moment later, by “translated” living believers. It’s going to be great. We’ll be transformed physically: unlike our present body, our new form won’t be susceptible to pain, sin, sickness, or death. And in an instant, we will be brought into the presence of our heavenly Father, to remain with Him eternally.
In a discouraging world, the soon return of Jesus is our great hope. But more it should impact what we do now.
Watch.  “Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching” (Luke 12:37 NKJV). We shouldn’t get caught up in the things that dominate the minds and hearts of nonbelievers, such as what we will eat, drink, and wear. Instead, we should be consumed with our pursuit of the kingdom of God. We should seek, above all, the rule and reign of Jesus Christ in our lives.
Be ready. If Christ came back today, would you be ready to go with Him? Every minute and with every decision we make we should consider, if He came back right now would I be proud or ashame.
When we have a family affair at our house, I eagerly await the arrival of each of my loved ones. My ears perk up with every noise on our drive. But we also clean the house and prepare a meal.
So it should be with Our Lord. We need to live as if He could return any moment, because He could. We should be all He would have us be and do all He would have us do.
He may not be coming back on Saturday; but He is coming back and because of that we are blessed.
Nick
