VBS Day Three – Too Radical?

On the third day of VBS I continued to observe and be amazed. I’m afraid that I’ve come to the conclusion that church could not be ever like VBS for some folks because it would be too radical, consider:
Kids praying for Kids – The pastor had kids praying for kids and, in fact, laying hands on each other. These kids are not ordained or even trained prayer partners. This kind of thing, if done on Sunday morning would be too nontraditional, i.e. radical. If allowed to continue and expand, they might be doing this kind of thing at home.
Casual dress – I noticed that everyone was very casually dressed. In fact, at some points I saw folks without shoes. Everyone knows that Sunday is for your Sunday Best. That’s why it’s called your Sunday best. Informal dress, in some cases folks dressed like Jesus did, would be way too nontraditional, i.e. really radical.
Jokes – On some occasions, the Pastor told jokes. Thank the Lord they were not very funny. If there had been laughter, this would have been really radical.
The lay out – The chairs were not in rows, all pointed to the stage. This is the proper arrangement for theaters and churches. Right? In fact, the chairs were hidden in the back. This caused people to participate instead of observe, as they should. They were communicating with each other and were not very quiet. Very nontraditional and possibly dangerous.
Lay teaching – I noticed that some of the workers who lead the small groups were not ordained or seminary trained. I just hope the clergy police don’t find out.
Upsetting Satan – What has been going on is so nontraditional that Satan seems to be upset. The pastor’s child suffered illness and his wife had to miss Wednesday night. My wife got sick just before VBS was to start and was ill until just after it was over. She toughed it out and stayed through half of it. Satan doesn’t seem to get this upset over what normally happens on Sundays — further proof that what’s been going on at VBS is non traditional. If what’s happening in church is making our lives uncomfortable, that can’t be right. Right?
Modern music – I noticed that no traditional hymns were sung. The music was very upbeat and caused clapping and toe tapping. I even noticed some body swaying and yes, even dancing.  Need I say more?
Taking things outside the church – On the way home last night my great grand child was singing the songs she heard and couldn’t stop talking about the evening. Really? What happens in church should stay in church. Right?
The bottom line – VBS may be “fun” but if church was fun we would have all kind of people showing up. It’s probably best that we don’t let the VBS phenomena spread. It just wouldn’t be right. Would it?
Be blessed.
