Distractions

Matthew 6:33

New King James Version (NKJV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Yesterday was an interesting day in college football. I sat in front of the television watching two of my favorite teams, the Cajuns and the Gators, play football. The Cajuns didn’t have much of a chance and I planned on an easy afternoon. However, the Cajuns went to Gainesville to play and outplayed the top ten Gators. They only lost on the last play of the game. I was proud of the Cajuns and relieved for the Gators. It that wasn’t enough fun the Tigers won and the evil Alabama Crimson Tide lost. I love Saturdays in the fall.

Last night Rose and I gathered with some of our best friends. We shared about out trials and our walks with Christ, but several times a couple of us check the football scores on our iphones. Sometimes football can be a distraction. In fact, during our conversation with these dear friends we realized just how much of what we deal with in life isn’t the main event, but just distractions.

I have to admit to being easily distracted. I’m one of those guys who likes to text or read the paper or my mail while driving. In the middle of a conversation, you might realize that I have drifted off. It’s discourteous and sometimes dangerous to be distracted. We need to focus on what’s important and keep the main thing, the main thing.

I have a habit of starting my day by writing my blog. It’s my way of putting the Kingdom First. I find when I do that God puts the rest of my day in order. When I don’t, when I am distracted by other concerns, my day never seems to be as productive as it could be.

We all have concerns for our children, financial worries, the recent election. These things are all important, but they are not the main event. Sometimes to focus on them to excess is a distraction. We all have our favorite diversions, call them distractions; but we need to keep them in the proper place. When trouble seems to take over your life, maybe it’s time to consider what is it you should be doing that these “distractions” are keeping you from?

Who are the Saint playing today? Sorry. I got distracted.

Stay focused. Avoid excessive distraction and

Be blessed.
