Fifty Years of Bond

“Hear this, you elders; listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors? Tell your children about it, and let your children tell their children, and their children the next generation” (Joel 1:2-3).
I felt I had a particularly productive morning yesterday even though I didn’t post on my blog. So I treated myself to the new James Bond movie in the afternoon.

It’s the 50th anniversary of the James Bond series. Skyfall may be my favorite Bond every. After 50 years Bond is beginning to show his age. Without committing any “spoilers.” He’s a step slower. He has to cheat to pass his physical. There are lots of unbelievable chase scenes. But the new “Q” looks like a teenager and when he goes to equip Bond there are no fancy gadgets, just a gun and a radio. “M” looks like she’s about 100 years old. There are beautiful women, of course; but they seem to treat Bond more like an interesting older uncle. It seems that all of England thinks that the whole Bond team is old fashioned and out of date. Turns out of course that Bond still saves the day.

I guess I loved this one because I could relate. I’ve been feeling old fashion and out of date. After the election I sometimes feel I don’t recognize America as the country I grew up in. I hardly ever see my great grandchild any more. When Nicky spent the night here last week, he was happier staying in the house and watching TV than running around doing chores with me.

We all need to know that we still have a mission and wisdom to share and stuff to do. One out of eight Americans is 65 years of age or older. Every day more than 5,500 Americans observe their sixty-fifth birthday. The number of aging people is expected to grow rapidly in the years ahead. In politics, this is considered a crisis. Where will the money come from to pay the benefits of social security and medicare to the swelling group of oldsters?

I think in God’s perspective we are and asset and not a burden,  a swelling army whose wisdom and experience will be needed more than ever in the tough days ahead.

Stay sharp and active and involved. The church needs all the 007s it can get.

Be blessed.

Nick
